Does your charity need an independent examination?
In plain terms, an independent examination is an outside check that your accounts match your records and meet the Charity Commission's requirements. It is lighter and cheaper than a full audit, and most charities below the audit threshold need one rather than an audit.
You almost certainly need one if all of these are true:
- Your gross income is more than £25,000 a year
- Your income is below £1M (rising to £1.5M from 1 October 2026)
- Your governing document does not require a full audit
- Your gross assets do not exceed £3.26M (if income is over £250k)
